Latin American Mission Program Diocese of Charlottetown (LAMP) is presenting the 32nd annual Daniel O’Hanley Memorial Lecture on Sunday, November 17, 2024, 2:00 pm at Central Christian Church Hall, 223 Kent Street, Charlottetown. Dr. Rosario Espinal is the guest lecturer.
The topic is: Development and Democracy: The experience of the Dominican Republic.
Dr. Rosario Espinal is an American citizen who was born and raised in the Dominican Republic. She is a Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Temple University in Philadelphia where she has led the Latin American Studies program and chaired the Sociology Department. She is an author of two key books on the struggle for democracy in the Dominican Republic. Her other work includes over 50 academic articles and reports for the United Nations on the political participation of Dominican Women and the quality of democracy. Since 2004, she has published a weekly opinion column in the Dominican press.
Many PEI residents know the Dominican Republic in various ways. Members and associates of LAMP have a close relationship with the Dominican people for over 56 years and have come to know something of the people’s longings for democracy. Over the centuries, many Dominican lives have been lost in their efforts to develop as a democratic country. As always, our countries to the North have a lot learn from their struggle.
Other everyday Islanders know the Dominican Republic as a choice vacation spot. Being a tourist there can also be an eye opener. The 2024 Daniel O’Hanley Lecture is an opportunity to go beyond knowing that Dominicans are not only hospitable: they are also very brave and hope-filled.
Each year since Daniel O’Hanley’s death on July 3, 1991, LAMP honours him and all Islanders by presenting the Daniel O’Hanley Memorial Lecture. Dan worked in very creative ways with a group of Nicaraguan men and women who were landless peasants. He was a strong supporter of their right to be an independent and democratic country. Dan was murdered in a botched robbery attempt. He is remembered for his courage and deep social justice convictions and actions. Daniel O’Hanley: Presente.
Entertainment and refreshments will follow the lecture. All are welcome!
