The “O” Antiphons

December 13, 2020

New Pilgrim Path Website of the Week

17th December marks the beginning of the “O” Antiphons, which have been sung at Vespers on the last seven days of Advent since the 8th century.

These short chants address Christ with seven magnificent Messianic titles, based on the Old Testament prophecies.

Beginning with O Sapientia (‘O Wisdom’) on 17th December, the antiphons beg God with mounting impatience to come and save His people, moving through the history of Redemption to culminate with O Emmanuel (‘O, God with Us’) on 23rd December.

What better way to conclude Advent than by praying these antiphons and meditating on the biblical passages that accompany each one?
