Pentecost: Becoming Flame

June 5, 2022

Pentecost Sunday is the 50th and last day of the Easter Season. It’s the day we extinguish the Easter candle and each of us – aflame – are called to go into God’s world to be Light ourselves.

Fr. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, scientist, paleontologist, philosopher and Jesuit priest, frequently used the image of fire in his writings.

One of his most famous quotations, from Toward the Future, is “The day will come when, after harnessing space, the winds, the tides, and gravitation, we shall harness for God the energies of love. And on that day, for the second time in the history of the world, we shall have discovered fire.”
