It Could Have Been Worse

October 14, 2022

Many of the Churches in the Diocese of Charlottetown suffered various structural damages when Hurricane Fiona struck the Island the night of September 23/24.

One of the most dramatic crashes occurred on the South Shore when the steeple blew off of St. Martin of Tours Church.

St. Martin of Tours is a part of the Pastoral Unit that includes St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Cornwall and St. Ann’s Parish in Emyvale.

Detail on the fallen steeple, note the wooden core.

St. Martin is the smallest of three PEI Catholic Churches that are constructed of red Island Sandstone. The others are St. Paul’s in Sturgeon and St. Mary’s in Souris.

Fortunately no one was injured and like any building it can be repaired and returned to service in due time. In our history many churches have been built, repaired and replaced by the parishioners and the local worshiping community, where there is the will there is a way.
