Fill The Box Challenge @ St. Dunstan’s

December 4, 2021

Candidates preparing to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation at St. Dunstan’s Basilica Parish recently collaborated with the Knights of Columbus for the “Fill the Box Challenge.” As a result of the generosity of our faith community, we have filled the large box six times over! This was a very successful clothing drive that will provide warm clothing and coats to the Sisters of St. Martha who directly assist those who are struggling in the Charlottetown area

The Sisters of St. Martha began serving the needs of Island students and priests in 1916 from their convent in St. Dunstan’s College. Over the years, their numbers and their projects grew and the Sisters also served in other parts of Canada and the US as well as in the Global South regions. In 1993 Burke’s Welcome Shoppe was opened to assist individuals and families struggling to meet the basic necessities of life in the Charlottetown area. It was named after Sister Florence Burke who worked with these individuals and families. Sister Aldona has managed the Shoppe since 2001 and is grateful to receive the clothing and coats that are being donated!

This past week catechists, Isaac and Sandra, were happy to be able to bring warm clothing and coats to the Burke’s Welcome Shoppe, which is located across the street from St. Dunstan’s Basilica Parish. They were able to see individuals and families in the Charlottetown area who are struggling, and who are receiving love and support from Sister Aldona without any exchange of money.

Through this service project, Confirmation candidates have taken the initiative to reach out into our community. They are growing in their understanding of the close relationship between faith and action, learning that serving others in need is not an option for a Christian but is an essential part of our Catholic identity. Throughout Scripture, we have been shown that we are called to love God and to show this through loving our neighbor. We serve others because we recognize the presence of Jesus in all persons and in all of God’s creation.

During this first week of Advent and leading up to Christmas, clothing will be delivered by our Catechetics program and the Knights of Columbus to Sister Aldona. A heartfelt thank you to all those who helped make this possible!
