At St. Andrew’s Chapel in St. Andrew’s on Sunday July 24, Fr. Art O’Shea, well-known church historian and Diocesan Archivist, will present a review of the “Four Churches of St. Dunstan in Charlottetown”.
In 2016 the Island Church celebrates the bicentennial of the first church in Charlottetown dedicated to St. Dunstan.
Since 1816 four St. Dunstan’s churches have been erected, on the corner of Great George and Dorchester Streets.
The first church, a modest wooden structure, was built at the request of Bishop J.O. Plessis of Quebec during his pastoral visit to the Island in 1813.
In 1829, with the creation of the Diocese of Charlottetown, the little wooden church took on the role of a cathedral.
The present stone cathedral, given the dignity of a Basilica, was built in 1919.

St. Dunstan’s Basilica is the 4th “St. Dunstan’s” on this site.
Fr. O’Shea will review the history of the cathedral parish with reference to the four churches.
The presentation will begin at 2 PM. Admission is by donation. Lunch included.
St. Andrew’s Chapel is located 3 km. east of Mount Stewart on Route 2.
