St. Andre Bessette Relic in Summerside

July 17, 2024

Bishop Joseph recently celebrated Mass at St. Paul’s Parish in Summerside for the Major Reliquary of St. André Bessette tour that took place in PEI between July 6 and July 12. The Major Reliquary consists of a fragment of St. André’s heart and also includes a beautiful medallion and stone from St. Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal.

The evening began with an exposition of the Relic of St. André; followed by a presentation by Father Jomon Kalladanthiyil, CSC (Congregation of Holy Cross), from Saint Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal, on St. André’s life and the many healings and miracles attributed to his intercession; Eucharistic adoration; Solemn Holy Mass in the presence of the Relic of St. André celebrated by Bishop Joseph; and it ended with the veneration of the relic and blessing with the Oil of St. Joseph.

The very young were captivated by this Major Reliquary and were attentive to the guidance of parents.

This prayerful in-person gathering offered an opportunity for the Catholic faithful of the Diocese to experience tremendous graces as they learned of the remarkable life and devotion of this saint. Many were moved by the simplicity of the life of St. André who is a beacon of faith and discipleship. Upon receiving the Oil of St. Joseph, all were invited to venerate the relic of St. André. Venerating the relic of St. André allows for a tangible sign of faith. It provides one an opportunity to honor the holiness of God expressed so beautifully through the virtuous life of St. André.

Though the line was long, the Catholic faithful were happy to devote time for the unique experience of touching the sacred Major Reliquary while entrusting their petitions to this virtuous Canadian saint.

Many touched the Major Reliquary and some touched their medallions, Rosaries, and crucifixes to the reliquary.

After venerating the Relic of St. André, many took the opportunity to remain in fellowship with each other and also have a chance to meet with Bishop Joseph. There were lively discussions filled with joy and peace!

We are grateful for the kindness and generosity of all involved in organizing the Major Reliquary of St. André tour across PEI!
