Interfaith Canada Day Service in North Rustico

July 3, 2024

As part of Canada Day celebrations, Bishop Joseph was invited to be part of the Canada Day Interfaith Service held at the North Rustico Sea Walk Park event grounds, which included prayer, Scripture reading, a reflection, intercessions, and hymns. This Interfaith Service was celebrated by Lorraine Lemay, Lay Pastoral Associate, Stella Maris Parish, North Rustico; Father Albin Arsenault, Saint John Paul II Pastoral Unit (Rustico, North Rustico, Hope River); Rev. David Dubois, Cavendish Baptist Church, Cavendish; Donna Nicholson, Worship Leader, Cavendish United Church, Cavendish; the many who attended the service from different faith backgrounds; and the main presenter, Bishop Joseph, who shared an engaging reflection for all present.

Bishop Joseph talked about his experience of being appointed by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops to co-chair the Roman Catholic/Evangelical Dialogue Group. Bishop Joseph explained that the primary goal of the Roman Catholic and Evangelical dialogue is to use the dialogue platform as a stepping stone to an ongoing shared mission while modelling what it means to be united in Christ, to be good neighbours.

Bishop Joseph shared, “The question of ‘who is my neighbour’ in our journeying together is crucial. Especially in a society where the crisis of family values is tangible; in a world that often emphasizes differences, divisions, and polarization, the Christian perspective offers a profound understanding of fellowship that surpasses differences and embraces all humanity.”

Bishop Joseph shared the Biblical story of the Good Samaritan, clarifying that the parable teaches us that our neighbour is not limited to those who share our beliefs, ethnicity, or social status but extends to anyone. He further clarified, “At the core of the Christian understanding of who is my neighbour is the universal call to love. Jesus instructed his disciples to ‘love our neighbour as ourself.’ This commandment is an invitation to embrace all humanity with love and compassion and to recognize every person’s dignity and worth, and respect their differences.”

After the Interfaith Service, there was a day full of festivities, great food, family fun, and live music. One of the highlights was an exciting, interactive parade that displayed many different floats, a spectacular marching band, and a flying priest – Fr. Albin was highly regarded! There were many smiles and many conversations by those gathered for the Canada Day celebrations creating a welcoming experience for all!
