What makes you think: it could be better?

December 6, 2024

Even when we love our parish, there is often one or two aspects of parish life that make us ask: why are we doing things this way? We could do things better than this.

One hundred and fifty-five Catholics gathered in five regional meetings to discuss this question and share experiences of parish life that have made them believe things could be better. Most of our 25 active priests were present, along with their close collaborators in parish ministry. There was significant agreement across the Diocese about the things that could be improved.

After this, participants were invited to describe their dream parish. If there were no limitations or obstacles, what would your dream parish look like? What would it feel like to be part of that community? The sharing on this question was hopeful and, again there was a lot of agreement in what was being shared.

In only two hours it was impossible to hear everything so participants were encouraged to write down their thoughts so the Renewal Committee can use the information in their planning.

Participants also received an update on the renewal initiative and were introduced to the Seven Pillars framework that will be used as we move forward in planning for renewal. These pillars are evangelization, discipleship, worship, community, service, stewardship, and leadership. As the work of mission-oriented renewal continues we can expect to hear much more about the Seven Pillars.

The next meeting of the Renewal Committee will take place in late January 2025. The Committee will review the feedback received from these meetings and begin planning next steps.
