Lighting the Way: editorial by Jewish-Catholic Dialogue

December 4, 2025

The co-chairs of the CCCB-sponsored Jewish-Catholic Dialogue have written an editorial in advance of Christmas and Hanukkah.

In December, even as the days grow shorter and the nights longer, Jews and Catholics celebrate the
holidays of Hanukkah and Christmas. Advent candles and Hanukkah lamps are to be found
throughout Canada, their respective symbolisms mirrored in other winter solstice festivals, both
ancient and modern, that find spiritual meaning in the calendar’s gradual turn toward light.

The editorial marks Christmas and Hanukkah, in the context of celebrating a decade of Jewish-Catholic national relations in Canada, and to share this good news in the midst of the current turmoil around the world.
