Low Gluten Altar Breads

June 28, 2017

A Sample of Altar Bread with approximately 0.01% total gluten content

Throughout the Diocese of Charlottetown we now have access to approved low-gluten hosts (approx. 0.01% total gluten content) that might enable people with sensitivity to gluten to participate more fully in Eucharistic Communion. For persons with Celiac Disease this was approved by the CCCB and instituted by Bishop Fougere in 1998.

Sister Rebecca Leis pours low-gluten altar bread batter into a machine that bakes the thin bread at the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration monastery.

At St. Dunstan’s Basilica these special hosts are in the ciborium held by altar server next to the priest in the centre aisle. At other parishes these hosts are in a special pyx and are distributed by the Priest or extraordinary Eucharistic ministers depending on their individual practices.

Please contact the individual pastor for all details.
